Original Shelby Cobra Daytona For Sale – Only $12,500!

by Mike

The title is not a misprint but it is misleading. The classified ad below was published in the December 1966 issue of Road & Track. There were only six original Shelby Cobra Daytona cars made and apparently this is one of them! These cars won the world FIA sport car championship in 1965 for Shelby American – the only time this has been achieved by an American company.

$12,500 was a lot of money in 1966 but this car is worth nearly $8 million today. The chassis number is not mentioned in this ad but by the description it sounds like Chassis Number CSX2287 – the prototype. This car was missing for 30 years and is now on display at the Simone Foundation Museum in Philadelphia and once belonged to Phil Spector, the music producer. Maybe Phil Spector answered this ad – or posted this ad?

One of these six cars, chassis number CSX2601, shown below, sold in 2009 at the Mecum auction in Monterey for $7,685,000. This is the highest price paid at auction for an American car.

This is a 1965 Shelby American factory poster celebrating the world championship (my father gave me a poster just like this one in 1965).

If you want a new Shelby Cobra Daytona like the one below then you are in luck because this car is made by Superformance.
