Tesla Suffers A Setback In Lawsuit Against Top Gear

by Mike –

On October 19 a British court ruled against Tesla in their legal action against the TV show Top Gear. Tesla has been claiming that Top Gear committed “libel and malicious falsehood” during a 2008 TV episode where the Top Gear TV crew tested the Tesla Roadster on a race track and concluded that the car’s range was only 55 miles and not the 200 miles claimed by Tesla.

The star of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson, concluded the segment by saying (referring to the Tesla Roadster), “in the real world, it doesn’t seem to work.”

Ouch – I can see why that would make Tesla upset but I still believe as I wrote before in Tesla Takes Legal Action Against Top Gear and The BBC Blogs About The Tesla Lawsuit that a lawsuit was a big, expensive mistake on the part of Tesla.

The Top Gear video testing the Tesla Roadster can be viewed at The Tesla and Top Gear Silliness Continues.

My advice to Tesla in these previous articles was “instead of a lawsuit arrange for Top Gear to do another test on the latest Tesla Roadster. Now that the lawsuit has been filed then start negotiating a settlement where the outcome is a re-test of the Tesla Roadster to be broadcast on Top Gear. I predict a very high probability that Jeremy Clarkson will be in a good mood for this episode.”

It is likely too late for Tesla to take this advice as they seem to be on the losing end of this silliness – all very predictable. You can read more at The Guardian.
