The Porsche Tapiro Concept – This Car Should Have Gone Into Production

by Mike –

Italdesign-Giugiaro, founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro, was acquired by Volkswagen in 2010. Italdesign has had a relationship with Volkswagen going back to the late 1960s and in 1970 they introduced the Porsche Tapiro Concept.

Porsche Tapiro - a beautiful car

This stylish concept car was based on the Porsche 914 with a 2.4-liter flat six-cylinder engine that produced 220 hp.

This beautiful car had gullwing doors for the cabin and gullwing doors for the engine compartment, similar to the De Tomaso Mangusta, which Giugiaro also designed when he was with Ghia.

This was Italdesign’s fourth prototype; the Bizzarrini Manta was the first car of any kind designed by Italdesign.

This Porsche concept was an actual running car unlike many other concept cars, including the Manta (which has since been turned into an excellent running car).

The Porsche Tapiro was destroyed many years ago and is now in Italdesign’s corporate museum. What a shame. It is also a shame that this car did not make it into production.

This car should have been included in The Wedge – The Shape of Things To Come article. My thanks to My Car Quest reader w111nut who reminded me of this oversight in the comments section.

Here is a world beating Porsche race car.
