A Barn Find Worth Talking About – A Briggs Cunningham Le Mans Corvette

by Mike –

Autoblog reported recently that the third, and for many years missing, Briggs Cunningham Corvette that raced at Le Mans in 1960 has been found in a warehouse in Florida.

This is not that car pictured here.

I have not seen that car yet but I have visited the teammate of that car, the No. 2 Briggs Cunningham Le Mans Corvette now owned by Bruce Meyer where I had the chance to take these pictures and hear Bruce Meyer tell me the stories of so many great cars. I wish I had a perfect memory.

The newly found No. 1 Corvette will be unveiled to a limited audience Thursday night, August 23, 2012 at the 2012 Corvettes at Carlisle event.

Briggs Cunningham was the Great American Sportsman who was on the cover of Time Magazine on April 26, 1954.

He was a predecessor to Carroll Shelby and like Shelby he drove race cars, he was a race team owner, a race car constructor and a car manufacturer. Unlike Shelby he was born rich and did not need any outside funding for his car racing passion.

Another appropriate comparison to Briggs Cunningham is Lance Reventlow who also drove race cars, was a team owner and race car constructor. Reventlow had success in sports cars racing in the US. When he tired of racing his operation was taken over by Shelby including the top team of people that he had assembled.

Any race car associated with Briggs Cunningham is special. In addition to all of this Briggs Cunningham won the America’s Cup yacht race in 1958 as the captain of the Columbia.

What a life plus he had good looks.

The Autoblog article is here.

A close friend of mine, the late Greg Paris, once owned one of the three Fiat Abarth 1000 Cunningham race cars. He owned the one driven to victory in the 1962 Sebring 3-hour race by Bruce McLaren. I thought he told me that one of these three Cunningham Abarths was missing but I believe it was found a few years ago.

It is great to see this lost Cunningham Corvette race car discovered after all of these years.
