Car Of The Day – Classic Car For Sale – 1980 Lamborghini LM002

by Mike –

Here is my pick for the classic car for sale today that I would like to own.

1980 Lamborghini LM002

The seller says:

* One Owner From New

* Very Good Condition

* Mileage is 28,500

This Lamborghini LM002 is for sale on eBay. The price is $88,888 (the seller hopes this is a lucky number) and it is located in Kyoto, Japan.

This may seem like an unusual car to be on My Car Quest but I have been attracted to this Lamborghini model for years. I may never own one but I think they are really cool – a V12 Lamborghini that can carry the whole family across the desert without using a road if need be.

This one has an uninspiring color but it would allow driving around town without attracting too much unwanted attention. The seller also did not post very good photos on eBay.

LM stands for Lamborghini Military, although it was never sold to any military group it was developed as a military vehicle.

The description below is quoted from RamboLambo, a web site dedicated to the LM002.

“Produced from 1986-1992, The Lamborghini LM002 is an icon and tribute to the lavish excess of the 1980’s. A vehicle that defies description and challenges all preconceived notions of what a sport utility vehicle “is” or “should be”. The LM challenges reality and seemingly, physics. Ponder these figures for a moment: 6800 Pounds. 4 Wheel Drive. V-12 Powered. 0 to 60 MPH in >8 seconds. Top speed of 125 MPH in Desert Terrain. 73 gallon fuel tank. 6 Mile-per-Gallon “Fuel Economy”. 345/60/R17 Pirelli Scorpion Tires Front AND Rear- No other car in the world uses tires with this size and these tires are specific to the LM. High/Low Transfer Case providing 4:1 reduction when engaged in LOW. Locking Center Differential. 485 Brake Horse Power and 400 Foot Pounds of Torque. It is a MONSTER.”

  1. This is interesting, I have never seen one in person. What is the body made of?

    • I believe they are fiberglass.

      • I owned a 1991 LM 002 America. I’m pretty sure, but not positive that the body is a combination of some aluminum pieces, and some fiberglass. It is a cool looking vehicle, but it is definitely a truck! Drove and rode worse than an old pickup truck!

      • It was virtually impossible to find replacement Pirelli Scorpion tires for the vehicle. Glad to have owned it, but relieved that it is in the past!

  2. Scot – thank you for sharing your first hand experience with a Lamborghini LM002. I knew there must be a reason why all of these that I have seen for sale have low miles. I also wondered where one would get a one of a kind tire and how much they must cost!

    Mike, always enjoy your car adventures which I found thru BaT. Local fix it shop had one sitting outside a few years back- largest Pirelli Scorpions I’ve ever seen ! & weren’t they of a special construction ? Always thought these were a precursor to Chrysler’s (then) next gen Jeep.
    Anyhow…I enjoy your Iso writings- years ago after moving to (this) Columbus,Ohio area I was driving around town & spotted a Bizzarini sitting at a junky repair shop in a not too good area of town. Yeah, 20 some years ago. Could kick myself for not stopping & asking. Sat there for some years.
    Best of Holidays to you.

    • Bob – welcome to My Car Quest. I still visit BaT sometimes. The LM002 tires were especially designed by Pirelli for Lamborghini. They were run flat and able to handle the desert heat. I suspect they are not great for everyday driving and they must cost a fortune since there were only about 300 LM002s made.

      We all have stories about the one that got away. I remember when a Grifo could be bought for $25K, a Ferrari 275 GTB for about $100K, a 1965 Shelby GT350 for about $25K and a Dino 246GTS for $38K.

      BTW, I used to live in Dayton and graduated from UD.

      Happy holidays to you too.

    Mike, those Pirellis had stainless chain built-in ? Some were ordered with a gun mount for the back end ? Here’s one more that got away- Mid Ohio 77-78 ? Dino sitting in the in-field for sale $3500 obo.
    Dayton, Ohio. The name Dayton is signed at the bottom of The Constitution of the United States of America.

    • Bob,

      I did not know that someone named Dayton signed the US Constitution.

      But after some reading I now know that the city of Dayton, Ohio was named after Jonathan Dayton of New Jersey who was the youngest person to sign the US Constitution and he was the fourth Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and later a member of the Senate. He also fought in the revolutionary war and was charged with treason in a matter involving Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton but the charges were dropped.

      He had an exciting life but did not get to drive a really cool car.

  5. These SUVs certainly have a strong stance but yet I can’t help wonder why they did not make many.

    I have been trying to contact the seller… he was being very secretive about the car. Not that good for anyone who wants to spend $80k without seeing it in the flesh first.
    Is this a con ? I hope not. I really want to buy an LM002

    • I suspect their could be a language problem. The seller had this listed at $78k on the previous listing.

      If the description is accurate then the price seems reasonable.

      Keep trying.

      • BlueBiturbo says

        Seller still has not given me the address yet.
        I’ve been to Japan so many times, they do not have difficulty with written english, plus there is google translate now 🙂
        If You look at the seller’s Ebay history, he mainly bought T-shirts etc years ago.
        I give up.

    Mike, hopefully one of these days soon I’ll be able to get over to imports garage & look up that TR6. I’ll snap some pictures all around including car. Hope all is well on the Bizzarrini front. One of my co-workers says its the most beautiful of exotics. Strong words of praise coming from a man that works with his hands.

    • I agree with your co-worker the Bizzarrini GT 5300 is very special and photos do not do it justice – when you see one in person it is a special experience.

      I also love the TR6 and am waiting for those photos and the story.

  8. BlueBiturbo – congratulations!!

    Let us know how it works out.

    • BlueBiturbo says

      Hi Mike.
