Here is my pick for the classic car for sale today that I would like to own. This type of Shelby Cobra does not come along very often – one family ownership from new and all the documentation one could want.

The seller says:

* Shelby Cobra 289 No. CSX2570 is Princess Blue with red interior and equipped with Class “A” accessories such as WSW tires and chrome wheels, this 289 Cobra was the Shelby car at the New York Auto Show at the New York Coliseum in March 1965

* The original owner bought this Cobra on December 22, 1965

* Twenty-five years later the son of the original owner inherited this Cobra

* In the recent years CSX2570 was treated to some delicate cosmetic attention, being very careful not to tarnish the years of patina that makes this car so special

* 69,000 original miles and a well maintained example

* With this Cobra are: original invoice from Verner Cadby Ford to the original owner, the original cashed cheque used to pay for CSX2570, original Cobra chassis instruction book, AC Cars to Shelby America invoice, Shelby America vehicle sales docs, Shelby America Shipping receipt for 2570 delivery to the NY Auto Show and photos of the Cobra throughout the years of ownership

The Shelby Cobra 289 has always been my favorite Cobra. The 289 engine means there is plenty of power and I like the elegant body style that is very close to the original AC design without the bulges added for the Cobra 427 model.

I also like the lack of a hood scoop – a much cleaner look. The color combination is wonderful, but I would not tell anyone the color is Princess Blue.

Assuming that the information on the dealer web site is accurate then the only question I have is “how much?” And one more question – which steering option does this Cobra have: worm and sector or rack and pinion?     A spectacular example of a spectacular car. The jazz musician, Mr. Herbie Hancock, is one of the people who have also owned a Shelby Cobra from out of the showroom floor. Once in a blue moon, Mr. Hancock and his car will be profiled in a magazine. He bought it when he started becoming successful, and acually used to drive it to his gigs!     • Most musicians seem to love their cars. I recently read that Nick Mason (drummer for Pink Floyd) used his profits, many years ago, from the album Dark Side of the Moon to buy a Ferrari GTO. That was a good investment.

  2. ~ along with GT40, always my favorite ’60s Fords, on this past Sunday i was admiring the early Cobra driven by Anne Francis in the 1965 noir TV series Honey West. some episodes may even have shown removable hard top. beautiful classic, Ms. Francis is a looker, too.

They were both born one week apart in March 1931, but it seems just like yesterday that I was watching them on Primetime Network TV with my parents as a kid in the 1960’s.       Look at my post today about the passing of Phil Remington who helped build these Cobras. Time is going by too fast. I also watched Star Trek in the ’60s and there was no DVR so I missed a few episodes but I caught up a few years later and now I have seen them all at least two times.

  5. The Hemmings Daily Newsletter has a great tribute to Phil Remington as well, as their lead story, and all the good development he did for the various marques he worked on.
