How To Sell A Ford GT40

by Mike –

There was a time when one wanted to sell a Ford GT40 an ad in Road & Track was the way to go as evidenced by these two ads below from the April 1971 issue.

More than one GT40 for sale in the same magazine! Even in 1971 a used Ford GT 40 was $15,000, however, it still would have been a great investment.

I would be very surprised to see this approach taken today. The preferred sales channel today for a very valuable classic car seems to be the classic car auctions.

For example below, this rare GT40 sold at the Villa d’Este auction in 2011.

This is what the seller said:

– Works prototype of the most historically important Ford racing car

– Fourth of only five GT40 prototype roadsters built; believed lost for 40 years

– 1965 Le Mans Trials, driven by Sir John Whitmore

– 1965 Targa Florio, driven by Whitmore and Bob Bondurant

I hope to see some great GT40s in person at Amelia Island today.

How would you sell your GT40 if you had one for sale?

  1. Sell it?! To paraphrase Charlton Heston, they have to pry my cold, dead hands from the wheel. 🙂

  2. Sell it with tears in my eyes and an aching heart

  3. I think there were 15 GT 40s at Amelia Island today. None for sale as far as I know.

  4. Everything is for sale
