1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Speciale At Auction In Monterey

by Mike –

This beautiful Ferrari 250 GT Bertone is a real eye catcher.

This 1962 Ferrari is a one off Bertone design styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro in 1961.

It is easy to spot the styling cues of Giugiaro. The hood scoop, for example, is similar to the hood scoop on the Iso Rivolta GT, also styled by Giugiaro.

The picture below shows a very young, and tall, Giugiaro standing next to the wooden buck of this Ferrari 250 GT.

I found this picture in Iso Rivolta The Men, The Machines by Winston Goodfellow while I was reading about a completely different subject.

I love a good coincidence.

Notice other similarities in addition to the scoop: the pointy nose, the single headlight with an “eye lid” and the park lights on top of the bumper.

This very Ferrari is coming up for auction next week in Pebble Beach at the Gooding auction.

The estimate is $14,000,000 – $16,000,000 USD.

One could buy the one and only Iso Rivolta GT Prototype right here on My Car Quest for a lot less than the auction estimate of this Ferrari. Both are one-of-a-kind design masterpieces by the greatest car designer of all time.

  1. The Ferrari is a thing of beauty, however it always amazes me that the Grifo is not selling for double it’s current market value on a relative basis. I had the opportunity to own a ’73 years ago and it was my favorite car I have ever owned. Next time the economy gets bad I plan on buying another series II Grifo if prices pull back 20%.

I read that Bertone wanted a Ferrari but wouldn’t drive one designed by Pininfarina so he had Giugiaro design one for him.
The paint is dark blue non metalic. Beautiful car, even more so in person.

  3. Thanks for the very interesting pic of the buck; it demonstrates how these one-offs were built. I brokered this car to Zambrano the first time he bought it, and it (and the other Bertone SWB) remain great favorites of mine.

I hope Bob is right. There are several cars I would still like to try if I could afford them!

  4. One of my favorites. Even though the car remained a one off Giugiaro made good use of the design. As noted the hood scoop was used on the Rivolta GT and the twin nostril design for the Grifo.

How big are those headlights 7″ ? they look larger. Notice how the rings are in the wooden buck.
