The 1962 Fiat Abarth 2300 S Coupe – What A Beauty

by Mike –

I was walking down the street at the Carmel Concours on the Avenue in August 2013 when I spotted this sweet looking Italian beauty. It is uh … a Fiat Abarth 2300 S Coupe. I know that because it says so on the sign.

I have never seen one of these – have you? Now I want one.

The Fiat 2300 range included the Pininfarina 4-door sedan, the 5-door station wagon and a Ghia Luxury coupe which was made for Fiat by Officine Stampaggi Industriali (OSI).

With 4-wheel disk brakes, 4-speed manual transmission with an optional overdrive or the Borg-Warner 2-speed automatic powered by a 6-cylinder engine with 105 hp, or 136 hp with the twin carburetors S.

This particular car is original as delivered with the Abarth exhaust system. Fiat apparently didn’t like the Abarth, this was years before they bought Abarth so only 50 were built and perhaps only 17 are left.

  1. I owned a few of those and I still remember the sound of the Weber carbs in combination with the timing chain. Thrilling! By the way, all of the 2300S Coupe cars were optimized by Abarth before they left the FIAT factory.

If you are lucky you can still get a nice car at about Euro 25K…nothing compared to a Ferrari 250GTE!

  2. Very nice! I want one too. These are the type of cars I go to these events to see!

  3. I many be wrong, but Hemmings Sports and Exotic Cars might have done an article on these cars about two years ago. Either this car, or another similar Fiat Abarth model. It is absolutely stunning – even the view from the back is gorgeous. Glenn in the Bronx, NY.

  4. Charles Maranto says

I believe the 17 left of 50 refers to the original 50 units ordered by Fiat from Abarth. The conversions were done in the Abarth factory and all these cars have unique badging (see pik). All the remaining cars were built by Fiat and Abarth supplied the parts only. This info is from Mr. Englebert Moell of Switzerland.

    • Mike, thanks for the redirect to the images. They are used in a full 10-page feature on this car in the prototype/test 100-page print issue of Automotive Traveler’s Classic Car, available on amazon.com.

      http://bit.ly/ATCC2014

In this issue there are features on one of the 10 1969 NASCAR Chevy Camaro Pace Cars, the 1979 Le Mans-winning Porsche-Kremer 935 (cover car), the Tom Kellogg-designed two-seat 1963 Studebaker Avanti conversion of chassis #023, the 1963 Chrysler Turbine Car and Chuck Marantos’ s Fiat 2300S Ghia coupe.

Automotive Traveler’s Classic Car will finally launch this summer as a quarterly publication if the Kickstarter is successful in attracting 1,000 subscribers.

  6. Mike, thanks for re-posting the article. I first saw a 2300 S Coupe in Padova a couple of years ago and got excited as well. Great looking cars from each perspective. I finally added one to my small collection last year. My car is a late 1967 series 2 car. It was originally delivered to the Steyr Fiat company here in Austria as the CEO´s company car. I drove her home to my garage last November, taking a 200 miles ride. Not a race car but a cool and comfortable touring car with enough power, great behavior and a super sound coming from the Weber´s.
A lot of information about the Fiat 2300 S Coupe´s can be found on the German Club page:
