European Style With American Muscle At Auction In Monterey

by Mike –

This year at the Monterey Car Week auctions there are quite a few of the American powered cars that were designed and made in Europe and mostly sold under a European brand.

Here are a few of interest: three Iso Grifos (the most I can remember in the Monterey auctions at one time), two Apollo GTs (also the most I can remember in one Monterey auction weekend), a Ghia 450 SS (even one at an auction is rare), a Dual-Ghia, De Tomaso Panteras and AC Shelby Cobras.

There are more not covered here and I recommend that if you are interested in bidding that you do your own due diligence on the car of interest and not just rely on the auction company information.

  1. Mark D. Carbone says

Can we get more pics of that Iso Grifo Series II please ?

  2. Wallace Wyss says

I don’t put Cobras in the same category of European style with American engines because Shelby did not tout the styling by A.C. or bodywork by A.C. like the Italian automakers did with their coachbuilder’s badges and publicity about the designers (Giugiaro with Iso, Tjaarda with Pantera). Shelby just adapted an existing A.C. model to his purposes. Still the Cobras have the advantages that the others enjoy, exotic looks but you can buy mechanical parts for the engine at any auto parts shop across the length and breadth of America.

    Also I thought Cleo Shelby,
Carroll’s widow, filed an injunction against the sale of CSX2000 , asking for an accounting of the trust to take place first;or has that been resolved?

    • Wally,

Shelby may not have touted the AC styling, nevertheless, it was an AC chassis and body style (although with some modifications).

AC Shelby Cobras were made in England by AC. AC also sold the Cobra in the UK and Europe without the Shelby brand.

Most Americans do not recognize the full contribution made by AC to their beloved Shelby Cobra, or AC Shelby Cobra.

  3. Also worth noting is that the 1972 Iso Grifo #369 was THE last Chevrolet powered Grifo – not “one of the last”.

    • Unfortunately I missed this wonderful car (#369). I have wanted to buy a very special series II like this. This looks to be one of the most original and finest later model long nose cars I have seen. Does anyone know if the current owner will keep the car or offer it for sale in the future?

  4. I see my former Ghia 450SS is going to the auction block. Will be interesting to see the final number on that one.

  5. What is the value range of an Iso A3C with minimal racing history these days?

  6. Bill Rice says

    Hi Everyone!

One thing conspicuously missing from this list is a Jensen Interceptor Convertible. It’s always confounded me why the Interceptor, particularly the convertible, hasn’t been recognized as desirable as some others in this hybrid group. The convertible was rare, only 2 1/2 years of production, it was a lovely Italian design, hand made in England to a quality level reminiscent of an Aston Martin Vantage Volante of the same era, and a powerful 440 V-8. The only negative I can think of is that I believe they were all automatic transmissions. I keep figuring that it’s just a matter of time before the collecting community wakes up to these.

Maybe I’m just overlooking some obvious detraction from these cars??

  7. Darren Frank says

    There’s also a Bizzarrini P538 at Mecum.
