Update: Monterey County Wildfire

by Mike –

Monterey Car Week for 2016 is underway.

Some of you from outside the Monterey County area who are planning to attend Monterey Car Week may not be aware we are in the middle of the largest wild fire in Monterey County in many years, known as the Soberanes fire (Big Sur fire).

Over the past few days Highway 1 has been shut down, off and on, south of Carmel on the way to Big Sur. Be aware this could affect your travel plans to Big Sur.

The information below is from the California Fire Incident Information web site – click here for more details.

Hwy 1 closed at 2:00 A.M. on 08/15/16 due to a hazard tree. HWY 1 is closed from the Ripple Cafe at 47047 Hwy 1 to North Coast Ridge Rd. Closure of HWY 1 has been extended to 12:00 AM August 16 due to the complexity of removing the hazardous tree.

Acreage/Containment: 74,604 acres – 60% contained
County: Monterey
Location: Soberanes Creek, Garrapata State Park, Palo Colorado, north of Big Sur
Administrative Unit: CAL FIRE San Benito-Monterey Unit/United States Forest Service, Los Padres National Forest

The smoke has cleared up recently in the Monterey Peninsula area and the latest forecast says it will be clear for the rest of the week.

Carmel Concours-on-the-Avenue

Tomorrow (Tuesday) I will be attending the Carmel Concours-on-the-Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea where most of the downtown streets will be filled with cool, classic cars. I expect it to be a great day!

  1. I arrived Thursday afternoon in Monterey. The light has been a defused yellow with smoke. The images I shot during Pre Historics races run this Saturday Sunday at Laguna have a strange contrast from the smoke. I was often able to smell the fire in the air. Lots of trucks and tired fire crews about, these guys have been real heroes. Nothing that has kept this from being the best place to be this week. I’ll look for you Tuesday morning And hope to see many of you at the track.

  2. Carmel street show had perfect weather, no smoke great temps. Cal fire was staying at our hotel carmel mission inn but left today to fight the Clear lake fire. Traffic was worse than the previous ten years IMO. Allow extra time for travel. The greatest car show on earth continues ……
