Interesting Collector Cars For Less Than $50k USD-Datsun 240Z

by Mike –

Previously we have featured several different classic cars as examples of cool collector cars that can be had for less than $50,000 USD. Today we are discussing the exciting Japan made Datsun 240Z.

Datsun 240Z

Before the Datsun 240Z was introduced in 1969 most Americans did not think much of Japanese cars, they were just cheap transportation.

The Datsun 240Z made a big impression on car lovers and changed the Japanese car image for good. The styling of the 240Z can remind one of Italian cars from the period. It is typical that Japanese car designers borrowed stylings from other car marques. The Datsun 240Z was sold in Japan as the Nissan Fairlady Z, a name that probably would not have gone over well outside of Japan.

The 240Z was powered by a 2.4 liter overhead-cam straight six-cylinder engine with a four-speed manual transmission. It had independent rear suspension and would hit 0-60 MPH in 7.8 seconds and top speed was 125 MPH. Not bad considering the low price. A three-speed automatic transmission was optional from 1971 on.

The Datsun 240Z was a big success with 148,115 sold of just the 240Z model alone and there were the follow on models 260Z and 280Z plus others.

These are still very stylish cars with parts readily available. Although I have noticed that an unmolested original, or even a correct restoration, for sale is rare.

I liked them when they were new and I still like them.

Number made: 148,115 from 1970 through 1973.

Mike – I owned the very same color combination ( green – black) back in 1971. Had it for years – great car. Have been trying to find one in excellent condition – I agree wth you – should make an excellent investment and be fun to own again. Richard Flasck

I currently own a 1971 Datsun 240Z. It is green with the tan interior. It sports a set of 52 spoke wires and a body kit from California. It is tons of fun to drive and gets more waves and thumbs up than I can count. With a mild cam, headers, weber carbs, a five speed, and Ansa exhaust system, it will still eat up all those rice rockets that always want to race me. I recommend this vehicle to anyone wanting a fun, sporty, economical Sunday driver that won’t break the bank, is easy to work on, and are rapidly appreciating in value.

  3. A wonderful , inexpensive and reliable alternative to many of the collector cars out there… styling that is very easy on the eyes and the sound of that wonderful straight six… Getting more ponies if that is your desire is easy and not expensive. key is find the nicest one you can…
