Rat Rod Photos

Recently Wallace Wyss wrote about the interesting subject of Rat Rods. Below are a few photos of this phenomenon from my files.

Faux Rat Rod

A Faux Rat Rod has had paint applied to look like rust, or worn paint, from a short distance but up close it is clearly a cleaver technique to make it appear as rust.

The 1942 1948 Buick Super, above, was created by Jonathan Ward who calls it a derelict.

  1. I would hardly consider a well worn Apollo GT a rat rod

    • The Apollo is listed under the label “Potential Rat Rod?”. This Apollo was well beyond “well worn”. It had not been driven in many years and did not have a gas tank. I suspect it will be brought back to life by its new owner, so no I don’t think it will be a rat rod.

      • SKIP EVERETT says

MOST SHOULD NOT BE RAT RODS, BUT RESTORED TO THEIR FORMER GLORY. THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR IS VERY RARE AND SHOULD BE LIKE NEW; IT IS AN APOLLO, MADE IN PASADENA, ITALIAN DESIGN, AND CAME WITH BUICK RUNNING GEAR. VERY LIMITED PRODUCTION. PROBABLY WORTH ABOUT $100K, OR MORE.

  2. I almost did not look at these pictures. I have always considered rat rods to be foolish looking thrown together junk. Stuff built by complete amateurs who had no idea of what they were doing. These seem to be something different. Modified just enough to have character. Most of them are quite pleasant to look at. They aught to come up with a new term for these kind of projects.

  3. Sorry it’s a ’48 super…’42s had a horizontal space at the top center of the grill, a couple of horizontal chrome strips on the lower body/fenders as well as an ivory steering wheel.

  4. Richard Bartholomew says

Rat rods or ratty hot rods? The Impala will probably be restored California Style I would think and the big green 50s car with the side opening bonnet is more like a resto mod that wants to look like an unrestored custom. Probably has a clean new vette engine in it.
