Happy Thanksgiving America!

by Mike –

Today is the eighth anniversary of My Car Quest and this is the 1,888th post according to my official counter. There have been more but I have deleted a few that were obsolete or I just did not like them anymore.

Thank you all for reading, contributing, donating, commenting and making this an interesting journey for one more year!

Happy Thanksgiving to all American readers and happy Thursday to everyone else.

Peanuts Thanksgiving

In the USA

Thanksgiving Day did not become an official holiday until Northerners dominated the federal government. While sectional tensions prevailed in the mid-19th century, the editor of the popular magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book, Sarah Josepha Hale, campaigned for a national Thanksgiving Day to promote unity. She finally won the support of President Abraham Lincoln. On October 3, 1863, during the Civil War, Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.

In Canada

Days of thanksgiving in Canada also originated in the colonial period, arising from the same European traditions, in gratitude for safe journeys, peace, and bountiful harvests. The earliest celebration was held in 1578, when an expedition led by Martin Frobisher held a ceremony in present-day Nunavut to give thanks for the safety of its fleet. In 1879 Parliament established a national Thanksgiving Day on November 6; the date has varied over the years. Since 1957 Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated in Canada on the second Monday in October.

  2. Mike,
I’m just starting down this path but have learned over the years that “car guys” are a special kind of people. Thanks to you, Don, and the other members who I haven’t yet met that are helping me find my ISO Grifo. I hope you all have a wonderful day and give thanks for all our blessings.

Well, to answer this greeting is to admit another year has come and gone, but in spite of that happy (we are still a country) happening I say the same to you and all of the rest of you who keep this going.
    Have a Happy Holiday everyone.

Thanks Phil. The subject of my addition to this commentary might seem unusual but I was asked the same on my radio show by the host, (I am co-host) and I said there what I will say here, that I am glad we live in a country that will “out” crooked schemes by automakers. in this case the villains were VW for concocting a plan to defraud Americans about diesel emissions. This fraud was only discovered by a group of university scientists who were doing smog testing but couldn’t afford a dyno, so they tested on the road and couldn’t figure out why the emissions they recorded were so high compared to what they were for the same car on the dyno. Then they discovered the presence of software that fooled the dyno. VW has paid billions in restitution and I am thankful we live in a country where we can’t be fooled by big companies for long…
