Giorgetto Giugiaro comes from a family of traditional Italian artists. He decided at an early age to take his artistic talents in a different direction. He started designing cars at Fiat and later Bertone and Ghia.
Pictured here are some of my favorite Giugiaro designed cars.
The beautiful Mangusta photo above is by Jonathan Root who is a photographer in the UK.
In 1968 Giugiaro started his own company, Ital Design, now known as Italdesign Giugiaro. He sold this company to Volkswagen in 2010.
Giugiaro is such a talented designer that he was the cover story of the March 1969 issue of Road & Track. In 1999 he was elected the Car Designer of the Century, an international award given to the most influential car designer of the 20th century, voted on by automobile journalists.
In the Road & Track article the writer, Pete Coltrin says, “As an individual he dominates his art as perhaps no one has before. Acknowledged as the best by most of his colleagues and rivals, he is also considered the best by countless other lovers of the art who don’t even know his name.” This was in 1969!
The Bizzarrini Manta was the first design of the new company Ital Design.
Read about the Ghia 450SS, the Bizzarrini GT 5300, the Iso Grifo, the Maserati Ghibli and the Maserati Bora.
