Race Cars In France – Dijon Not Le Mans

by Mike –

The event was the Master’s Historic Racing at Circuit de Dijon-Prenois, France.

The Photos are by My Car Quest reader, Julian Wolfendale.

Above is a photo of something that you do not see often, actually I have never seen one in person – a Scarab Formula 1 race car by Lance Reventlow.

This was a very unsuccessful race car and when Lance Reventlow tired of racing he turned over his Southern California shop and the excellent staff he had put together to Carroll Shelby who used this as the beginning of building his Cobra empire leading to the FIA world championship in 1965.

Look below, here are some of those Shelby Cobras.

Allard race car

The car above looks like an Allard J2 but I am not sure.  Allards were British cars powered by Ford engines usually.

The J2 was a model targeted at the American market. They were available with a variety of different American engines, including a new Cadillac V8, which was much more powerful than the Ford engines.

It is believed that Allards gave Carroll Shelby the idea of putting an American V8 in a small well designed European chassis. Interesting that the Shelby name has come up twice so far.

The car below also looks like an Allard but I am not sure of the model.

Above is a Maserati, maybe a 200S?, next to a Ferrari single seater.

Below is a Bizzarrini GT 5300 next to what looks like a Lola T70 Coupe.

Maserati 200S?

Can anyone tell us in the Comments what these two below are? And tell us the marque of the cars above that are not clearly identified?

Race cars

What Are These?

It’s interesting that in Europe most of the Cobra’s run with hardtops. In the USA most don’t and didn’t during that era.

I am curious did they run with the hardtops in Europe during the sixties , or do they just put those on today to pick up some more speed? Either way it seems to make for a very small tight cockpit with limited visibility.

Has identified the car that I labeled “Allard?” as a Frazer Nash and found a photo on ebay of this very car.

I believe the dark green Maserati “505 YUA” is the Maserati 300S s/n 3056 run by Steve Hart.
