Porsche At Le Mans

by Mike

Porsche is accustomed to winning races. At one time Porsche was dominant at Le Mans but that was a long time ago.

Porsche returned to the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year and they did not win as shown in this self-effacing video below made by Porsche themselves.

They lost to Audi who has been strong at Le Mans over the past many years. The lessons Audi has learned on the race track must impact the design of their street cars like the Audi A3.

Porsche still has more overall wins (16) at Le Mans that any other constructor but Audi is catching up with 13 wins.

The Porsche 917 gave Porsche their first overall win at Le Mans in 1970 and a Porsche 917K like the one below will be up for auction in Monterey in August 2014. It will likely set a record price for a Porsche sold at public auction, partly because it was one of the race cars used in making the Steve McQueen movie, “Le Mans”.

A movie star car and one of the most important race car models in history – that makes for a lot of bidding and a high price!
