Here is my pick for the classic car for sale today that I would like to own. I mean really like to own. This 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 is up for auction by RM in Arizona in January.
1965 Shelby Mustang GT350
RM says:
* One of just 562 Shelby GT350s produced in 1965
* Wimbledon White with rare “stripe delete” option
* Comprehensive engine rebuild; only 300 test miles since
* Rare and proper wood-rimmed steering wheel and “Cyclops eye” tachometer
This example is most unique in that, from the factory, it did not wear the dark blue Shelby stripes over the Wimbledon White hood, roof, and trunk, as did most of the production run. The car was repainted some time ago but still presents well, and it is equipped with its original interior, which is nicely preserved and presents an honest patina of time, care, and sympathetic enjoyment.

The estimate is $200,000-$250,000.

I really like the no Le Mans stripes on a 1965 GT350 – when have you ever seen that? Almost all 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350s have the stripes today even if they did not come that way originally every owner put them on, except for the owners of this example. A 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 without the Le Mans stripes is rare and I like that, especially if it did not come with the stripes originally.
I saw these classic cars when they were new driving around Los Angeles when I was a kid. I had Cobra T-shirts, decals, posters and postcards directly from the Shelby factory. The only thing I have left is a Cobra 427 postcard. I never did get a Cobra nor a GT350 because I went off into the Iso Grifo and Bizzarrini world. But I still have my dreams.
The only real question I have after reading the RM description; is the engine the original? RM does not specifically say if the engine is original or not but they do say that the interior is original and this GT350 has 44,000 miles. I believe the engine must be original or else RM would have said it was not. But it is a question that needs to be asked.

This looks like a decent car and is much cheaper than the one posted before here:

I notice this GT350 on eBay did not sell – it will be interesting to see what this one does at the RM auction.
Reminds of a Mustang that Jean-Louis Trintignant drove in “A Man and a Woman”.
Mike, I’m with you on this one as the car to have. Definitely need to know the entire history, including that of the drivetrain. I’d like to add that 2013 Mustang Shelby GT500 is a future classic and would be the New car to buy. I could see similar appreciation of the ’13 Shelby 40 years from now… This is coming from a non-Ford guy.
George,
Thanks for the tip but I can’t wait 40 years.
