The Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles exhibit is presently on display at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, Tennessee through September 15, 2013. The first fine art museum exhibition devoted to vehicles of the Art Deco era, Sensuous Steel highlights 18 automobiles and two motorcycles from the 1930s and ’40s.

Conventional wisdom states that only the finest automobiles, restored well beyond showroom condition so that every single flawless component counts as a work of art, win top honors at major concours d’elegance events. Sometimes, however, concours judges think outside the box, and such was the case at last weekend’s The Elegance at Hershey event, where the impressive but unrestored 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C, owned by Bob and Sandy Bahre of Alton, New Hampshire, took home the Governor’s Cup, The Elegance’s equivalent of Best in Show.

Best of Show winner, the 1938 Alfa 2300 B

San Marino is a toney area of town near Pasadena but redolent of gentler times where there are no loud noises and no graffiti; a town that presents a kind of isolated feeling like nearby Santa Anita racetrack which makes you feel like you are back in the 1930s.

The show takes place in beautiful Lacy Park, and is formally titled the San Marino Motor Classic.
