What is Supercross you ask? Well it is an interesting version of motorcycle racing and may have ultimately evolved from the even crazier Board Track Racing.
Both versions take place in an enclosed stadium where easy spectator viewing is part of the attraction unlike motorcross which takes place in a more natural venue.
Supercross is a direct evolution from motocross but Supercross involves off-road motorcycles on an artificial dirt track, usually in a stadium, with steep jumps and obstacles just to make it a little more interesting. This in-stadium spectator experience has helped make Supercross more popular than motorcross. It also would seem to make Supercross more accessible for Supercross Live TV or Internet viewing.
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) awards three Supercross Championships each year; the 450cc, and both an East and West division of the 250cc classes (the classes specify the engine size).
The AMA series begins in January and continues until early May. It is made up of 17 rounds in the 450cc Class, 9 rounds in 250cc West Class and 9 rounds in the 250cc East Class. The twelfth round at Indianapolis in April and the final round at Las Vegas in May have an East-West Shootout.
You can see there are plenty of opportunities to watch this exciting motorcycle racing series and from the photos you can see that the racers lay it on the line and seem to get pretty dirty.
