The Bentley Continental R and T: When Bentley Regained Its Confidence

by Mike Gulett –

For many years I drove a new Bentley Continental GT and loved it, although it was expensive to maintain fortunately it was reliable. I have always wanted a Continental R or T but Rebecca killed that idea because she thought they looked like an old man’s car. I told her “but I am an old…” she stopped me right there and we have not added one to the garage — at least not yet. But I still dream about it.

There was a long period when Bentley seemed to be living the wrong life. Bentley cars were beautifully made, expensive, and carried the prestige that comes with the winged ‘B’ badge. But most Bentleys were essentially Rolls-Royces wearing a slightly different outfit.

Bentley Continental R

The proud sporting marque that once dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 1920s had become a polite luxury brand. Comfortable, dignified, and perhaps a little dowdy. Then in 1991 Bentley did something that surprised many people. They built a car that looked and felt like a Bentley again — the Bentley Continental R.

A Shock to the System

When the Continental R arrived at the Geneva Motor Show it looked substantial, powerful, and expensive. This Bentley was not trying to blend in.

It was also the first Bentley since the 1952 R-Type Continental with its own unique body. This alone made it historic.

For decades Bentley had shared bodywork with Rolls-Royce models, but the Continental R stood on its own. It had wide shoulders, a long hood, and a stance that suggested elegant strength rather than flash.

It looked exactly like what it was: a grand touring coupe built for someone who wanted to drive themselves, not be chauffeured.

It was powered by the 6.75-liter turbocharged V8. The horsepower was never the main story. The real magic was torque—vast, effortless torque that could move the heavy Bentley forward like a locomotive.

Press the accelerator and the Continental R didn’t leap forward, it surged.

Built the Old-Fashioned Way

These cars came from Crewe, England assembled with a near old-world level of craftsmanship. The interior was filled with deep walnut veneers, thick leather hides, and metal switchgear that felt as though it would last forever.

The doors closed with a reassuring weight and sound. The steering wheel was wrapped in leather that felt hand-finished. Not a mass-produced luxury car, it was something closer to a coachbuilt grand tourer.

The price reflected that reality, in the early 1990s the Continental R was among the most expensive cars in the world.

Buyers understood what they were getting: a car that felt like a modern interpretation of the classic Bentley continent-crossing coupes of the 1950s.

The Continental T

The Continental R was Bentley rediscovering its identity and the Continental T was Bentley deciding to have fun with it.

Introduced in 1996, the Continental T took the basic formula of the R and turned it up a notch. The wheelbase was shorter and the rear track was wider. The stance was more muscular, with flared rear fenders that gave it an aggressive look.

The engine produced even more power (420 hp) and torque than the R—approaching 650 lb-ft, an astonishing figure at the time. The result was a luxury coupe that behaved like a muscle car.

The Continental T felt like a Bentley built for an owner who needed to drive—someone who appreciated both the smell of leather and the satisfaction of pressing the accelerator and taking turns at speed.

The Continental T was a rare combination of British luxury and brute force.

The Car That Changed Bentley’s Future

It’s clear now that the Continental R and T arrived at exactly the right moment for Bentley and Bentley lovers.

During the 1990s Bentley sales began to climb, eventually surpassing Rolls-Royce for the first time in decades. The brand suddenly felt exciting and important again.

When Volkswagen Group acquired Bentley in 1998, the company already had a renewed identity: Bentley would be the maker of powerful, luxurious cars for drivers.

That approach eventually produced the modern Continental GT, a car that transformed Bentley into a worldwide success. The genesis of that transformation can be traced directly back to the Continental R.

A Last Glimpse of Old Crewe

The Continental R and Continental T are among the last Bentleys from the traditional Crewe era, before modern manufacturing methods and global scale changed the brand forever.

They are big, heavy, beautifully handcrafted machines powered by an engine whose lineage stretches back to the Eisenhower administration. They are certainly not “old man’s cars” as some people seem to think.

They do belong to a different automotive world and that may be why enthusiasts like me appreciate them so much today.
