This 1965 Bizzarrini GT 5300 Strada was for sale at auction a few days ago in Monterey by RM Auctions.
It sold for $693,000, including the buyers commission. I believe this is a world record for this model at a public sale. This Bizzarrini GT 5300 is chassis No. IA3 0234. It also has the chassis numbers B 0220 and B 0234.
RM says this about the chassis numbers,
Bizzarrini specialist Jack Koobs de Hartog surmised the following: “Chassis B 0220 was built by Bizzarrini as an Iso Grifo A3/C and probably not completed. The chassis was delivered to Drogo on February 1, 1965, and was one of the unfinished cars caught in the transition after March 17, 1965, from Carrozzeria Sports Cars (Piero Drogo) to Carrozzeria B.B.M. and Bizzarrini’s separation from Iso later that year. Importantly, all of the Bizzarrini books and history list this chassis number but nothing further about the car.”
It is not normal for a car to have more than one chassis number but this is explained and adds a little color to the history of this Bizzarrini GT 5300.
The paint, chrome and leather interior are well done. I am less impressed with some of the other details including the engine bay.
It took two people to open the hood; one to hold the lever and one to lift the hood. The trunk holder was ready to fall off and the doors did not shut very well.
Despite these detail issues this is still the best Bizzarrini GT 5300 Strada that I have seen at auction in five years.
These details can be easily corrected or the new owner can just drive this Bizzarrini GT 5300 and have a blast!
