The Only Lamborghini At The Hillsborough Concours

by Mike –

Early Sunday morning was a good time to drive from Carmel to Hillsborough, stopping in Los Gatos to pick up a friend. There were few cars on the road and the temperature was very comfortable.

Later in the day at the Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance the heat may have suppressed the spectator turnout.

I was surprised that my Lamborghini Espada was the only Lamborghini there out of more than 200 cars and motorcycles.

The drive home included high temperature driving, with a few traffic stops. I watched the coolant and oil temperature gauges move up and down with the outside temperature. Thankfully they both dropped to normal levels as I approached the coast and happily the air conditioning worked well on this 240 mile round trip drive in the Espada.

Nice to see the Espada on the green and it looks like you had perfect weather. I started using Evans waterless and since then I have never worried about running hot or boiling over.

Great looking Espada. Love the color.

You would think with the many fortunes made in Silicon Valley start-ups there would be more Lamborghinis brought out to the show but I have a few theories why an almost no-show of the prancing bull cars at that concours. Theory #1: The popularity of older examples of a given marque depends on having a shop in the area that specializes in the old cars, finding rare parts and fabricating them if cetin parts can’t be found. Maybe there are Lamborghini dealers but they wouldn’t know a ’60s or ’70s one if it ran over their foot.
Theory #2 The newly rich, cashing in on their IPO of a start up, don’t know about older models, but only buy new or late models. Or, Theory #3–this is scary, they don’t know what a concours is…is the audience for concours aging?

It might be a combination of all of the above. Keeping a normally aspirated V12 in tune takes a skilled old world mechanic and with the popularity of Cars N Coffee who wants to stay at a event for eight hours when you can see everything on the field in two? The bay area used to have one of the best Lamborghini mechanics Al Burtoni, not sure if he’s around anymore.
