A Few Interesting Cars At The Auctions In Monterey

by Mike –

There will be several hundred classic and collectors cars sold at the auctions next week on the Monterey Peninsula during Monterey Car Week. People who follow the collector car market will be watching closely for any clues indicating where the collector car market is headed.

For me I like to preview many of the auctions and follow up on cars I like. Here are a few that I think are interesting.

Worldwide Auctioneers will hold their Pacific Grove Auction for the first time. Now there are six major auctions held during Monterey Car Week.

1963 ASA 1000 GT

My first car is at Worldwide Auctioneers, and is a rare ASA 1000 GT. These little Ferraris are interesting and a great alternative to the much more expensive Ferrari with a 250 V12 engine.

I wonder what would have happened if Enzo Ferrari had decided to take this to market with a Ferrari badge?

• Extremely rare – one of only an approximate 60 “Ferrarina” produced
• Matching numbers engine

• The 5th example of the ASA 1000 GT built and Mr. De Nora’s personal car
• Painstaking, long-term restoration to factory standard completed 2014

ESTIMATE: $125,000 – $150,000

1966 Iso Grifo GL Series I by Bertone

This 1966 Iso Grifo GL Series I is being auctioned by RM Sotheby’s.

This looks like a nice example with a low price estimate.

1966 Iso Grifo

I notice that RM Sotheby’s has various jewelry and watches listed in their running order along with the cars, no doubt the Sotheby’s influence on RM after their merger.

1966 Iso Grifo

RM Sotheby’s wrote about this Iso Grifo,

Chassis no. GL 650082
Engine no. 895 F0513HT

-The 1966 Paris Salon de l’Automobile show car
-Said to have been personally ordered by Nuccio Bertone
-Correct Grigio Astrale over Pelle Avana color combination
-Advanced Italian styling and muscular American performance

ESTIMATE: $275,000 – $350,000

The statement above “personally ordered by Nuccio Bertone” could lead a reader to think that this was Nuccio Bertone’s personal car which is not likely. This car was ordered by his company, Bertone, for the Paris show. Nuccio Bertone probably had to sign the order.

2005 Ford GT

The Ford GT is a modern collector car that has more than doubled in value over the price when they were new just about a decade ago. This example is being auctioned by Mecum. I like this color and the lack of stripes makes it a little rare.

1966 Shelby GT350H Fastback

This rare Shelby GT350H will be up for auction at Bonhams. The ‘H’ stands for Hertz and these were rental cars sold to Hertz by Shelby.

Most of the 1966 GT350H models were black with gold stripes but a few were either blue, green, white or red with gold stripes. The vast majority had an automatic transmission to make it easier for Hertz to rent.

There are several ’66 GT350s up for auction in Monterey this year and this GT350H in blue seems like a special one to me.
