All McLaren F1 cars are special but the one sold at the Gooding auction in Pebble Beach during Monterey Car Week 2021 is extra special. First it is a one-off color – a beautiful brown called Creighton Brown. And second it has only 390 Km (242 miles) since new.
I know you all have stories about the special cars that got away and yes I have one about a McLaren F1. It was about 15 years ago when my favorite classic car salesman called me and offered a yellow McLaren F1 for only $1.7 million. I looked at it and thought it was too expensive.
I suspect that yellow may also be a one-off color for the McLaren F1. It eventually went to auction in Monterey and sold for $1.7 million including dealer premium. Imagine the deal I could have made if I would have been serious because I could have prevented the dealer from incurring the auction fees and I would not have had an auction fee either. I may have been able to buy it for $1.5 to 1.6 million directly from the dealer (if I could have found the money) and today it is worth…a lot more. Maybe not $20 million but a lot more than $1.7 million. Another lesson learned.
