The First Porsche Made At Auction In Monterey (1939 Porsche Type 64)

by Mike Gulett –

This is considered the first Porsche car made that eventually led to the Porsche 356 and 911 sports cars. It is up for auction in August 2019 at The RM Sotheby’s Auction in Monterey. Could they get $20 million USD?

The Porsche 64 is also known as the Type 64 and Type 60K10. The Volkswagen Beetle was the Type-60, and the name “60K10” means body design 10 for the Type-60 Beetle. Its flat-four engine produced 50 bhp and produced a top speed of around 160 km/h (99 mph).

Three cars were made in aluminum by Reutter. One was destroyed early in World War II and the two remaining were used by the Porsche family. This is one of those two.

RM Sotheby’s writes,

Without the Type 64, there would be no Porsche 356, no 550, no 911,” says Marcus Görig, Car Specialist, RM Sotheby’s. “This is Porsche’s origin story, the car that birthed the company’s legend, and it offers collectors what is likely an unrepeatable opportunity to sit in the seat of Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche. With this car, the new owner will not only be invited to the first row of every Porsche event worldwide—they will be the first row!

What a great opportunity for a well-healed Porsche enthusiast. The constraints on the design and build of this car — for the Berlin-Rome road race, which was cancelled due to war — would be enough to make any designer to throw in the towel. It was a VW (or KdF in Nazi terminology) and had to have a resemblance to that car. And, use all major components from the Volks. But materials were in short supply and the Porsches had to get very creative to get this car built. Certainly a tribute to the genius Ferdinand Porsche and to the tenacity and creativity of his son, Ferry.

    An historic automobile.
