1937 Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet at Auction by RM Sotheby’s

by Mike Gulett –

I generally do not lust over pre-war cars – but this Bugatti Type 57 is one exception.

While I was previewing the RM Sotheby’s auction during Monterey Car Week I noticed this beautiful Bugatti sitting in a corner all by itself in the upstairs display area at the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey. I walked over and was captivated by its beauty. The body color is unique, the interior is exquisite and it has custom luggage that fits neatly behind the seats. It looks much better in person than in the RM Sotheby’s on-line catalog.

There was room for only two people-a true 1937 sports car. The design details are really special and it looks like an exceptional restoration.

If I owned this Bugatti I would probably ruin the restoration by driving it too much – lunch in Big Sur, dinner in Pebble Beach where it would fit right in, a trip to San Simeon and on and on…

RM Sotheby’s writes,

Engine No. 48

Exceptional, exquisitely detailed restyled coachwork

Mechanically upgraded, including hydraulic brakes, in-period

Beautifully presented, concours-winning Alan Taylor restoration
