For the ArtCenter College of Design Car Classic on October 20th.
by Wallace Wyss –
If there is one college that stands above all others in supplying the auto industry, it is ArtCenter College of Design, high on a hill in Pasadena. Each year they have a car show, called the “Car Classic.”
Each year the theme changes and this year the show will show cars that serve as a reminder that behind every beautifully designed vehicle stands an innovative designe — one most likely educated at ArtCenter College of Design (they like to run the names “Art” and “Center” together).
This year, ArtCenter’s annual Car Classic features unique, custom, specially built vehicles that will include early coachbuilt cars, custom hot rods and motorcycles, concept cars, bespoke supercars and specially modified vehicles from all eras—classic to modern to concept—that represent the finest examples of original automotive design.
ArtCenter says that you may have a chance to meet some of the innovative designers who brought these visions to life, and I can vouch for that, having had conversations there with luminaries like Pete Brock who designed the Cobra Daytona coupe and the DeTomaso P70.
Hear the stories behind some of the most iconic vehicles of our time. I also remember meeting a former GM designer who built a special Pontiac “his way” as a tribute to his old boss Bill Mitchell.
An extra added attraction to the show is that you get to walk through the hallways and peek into the design studios, see 3D rapid prototyping facilities and their own gallery.
The show honors the very best in industrial design, showcases the College’s strong ties to industry, and celebrates the indelible mark ArtCenter alumni have made on the world of transportation, all in a friendly environment and beautiful location.
The show is Sunday, October 20, 2019 from 10:30 am – 4:30 pm at the ArtCenter College of Design Sculpture Garden 1700 Lida Street Pasadena, CA 91103.
