Spyker Is Back!?

by Mike Gulett –

Spyker announced on August 28, 2020 “a far reaching collaboration” between Spyker and Boris Rotenberg, owner of SMP Racing and BR Engineering, his business partner Michail Pessis, co-owner of SMP Racing Monaco as well as owner of Milan Morady SA in Luxemburg and R-Company GmbH in Germany.

The details are skimpy in their press release but they said that they would be back in production in 2021 delivering first the C8 Preliator followed by the D8 Peking-to-Paris SUV and the B6 Venator.

You may remember that Spyker acquired Saab from General Motors in 2010, which turned out to be a bad idea. Saab went bankrupt in 2011.

The press release says,

There can be no doubt that Spyker has had a few very tough years since the demise of Saab Automobile AB, in 2011. With this new partnership those days are definitely gone and Spyker will become an important player in the supersportscar market segment.

They were active in international GT racing with their race division, Spyker Squadron, for many years. They had made 265 road cars before they went bankrupt in 2014/2015.

In 2013 when they introduced the B6 Venator Concept it was reported that the engine would be sourced from Lotus meaning it is a Toyota engine modified by Lotus engineers. This is not a bad thing, Toyota makes great engines and Lotus has great engineers. Previous Spyker models were powered by an Audi V8 beefed up to 400 hp.

This new announcement makes no mention of the engines.

Can they make a success of it this time? Only time will tell but I do hope so. I am a big fan of their cars. I test drove the first model many years ago, the C8 Spider, and thought it was a blast to drive and the style and craftsmanship are special.

  1. Ahhh, I remember clearly the day Martin Button asked me for a business proposal to do PR and Marketing for a new car called Spyker. Where does time go?!

  2. Un vraie coup de cœur pour l’intérieur, bravo, l’extérieur ça manque de fantaisie à l’Italienne trop sobre, il devraient s’inspiré des coupés de chez ALFA ROMEO.
    Bravo tout de même.

A real crush on the interior, well done, the exterior lacks fantasy in the overly sober Italian style, it should be inspired by coupes from ALFA ROMEO.
    Well done all the same.
