Yes, all media is subject to review and since I wrote TV commercials myself in another life, I let the brickbats fly. In this case it was the Will Ferrell ad for the 2021 Super Bowl (American football).
You can find the video below:
Cadillac Lyriq And GMC Hummer EV Star In GM’s Super Bowl Ad
Ferrell portrays an All American suburbanite who is mad at Norway when he discovers they have more electric cars per capita than the US. So right away he wants to go over to Norway with the latest American electric cars such as the 2023 Cadillac Lyric and a cameo shot of the GMC Hummer EV. (Oh, it’s only 2021 now but what the hey…)
Anyhow he recruits his friends who have electrics and keeps calling them each time he thinks he’s in Norway but he keeps ending up in the wrong Scandinavian country.
I love it because I have met Norwegian car fans and they love American cars albeit 1950s ones. But if you are going to war with a country, I prefer this goal–we have more electric cars per capita than you do.
What I liked about re-visiting the commercial on You Tube was the letters to the editor. There’s a few that will make you laugh…

I’m a Will Ferrell fan in any event and liked him in this ad….one of the better ones for the Super Bowl. I liked both EV’s too.
His not wishing to car pool sends a message. I am totally against EVs. This commercial makes Americans look stupid (which most are). I have toured extensively in both Norway, and Sweden with my vintage Indian motorcycles. No where else have I seen a fonder appreciation of early American vehicles. Norway is very rich from their oil sales from their North Sea.
I congratulate the Norwegians in thinking modern, and this coming from a slow moving flip phone guy, Their per capita electric car ownership make us Americans look slow to embrace new ideas. It’s a long way from 4% electric sales in US to the over 50% of Norway but now that the first shot has beeb fired, I like the idea of an International competition. I just hope Norway doesn’t outlaw old internal combustion cars . By the way I contributed to AMCAR, their American car magazine.
It is a bit of fun and Will Ferral does spoof the ‘All American’ guy next door, but will it sell cars. Maybe, or was it just entertainment?
I really think it made the answer to “What country buys the most electric cars per capita?” more important. It will be embarrassing if we re no. 37 in the 2021 statistics.
