The Malibu Cars and Coffee Continues, Sort Of

Come for the McLarens and Porsches, stay for the Ferraris and Jaguars.

Text and photos by Richard Bartholomew –

After skipping the weekly trek that I had been doing for several months due to a foot injury your faithful exotic car photographer Sherpas on and made the drive this past 4th of July to see what I could see in Malibu. I saw no fireworks but you can decide if I saw cars worth photographing.

The once a month ‘secret’ Malibu car show on the surf did not happen, zero, zilch. Either because of the holiday or maybe that crowd is getting ready for Monterey Car Week. I am not sure if the Bluffs, Zuma, Trancas or the other shows in the area are on or will ever be on again but hopefully the best show in the area will eventually open again Cross Creek.

The biggest show that drew lots of nice cars every week was at Cross Creek and Pacific Coast Highway. Stories all last year on My Car Quest attest to this. Cars from the Peterson Automotive Museum board member, Bruce Meyer, and Jay Leno’s cars were always high points of that event and in this town and at this show you were going to see the best Land Rovers, Mercedes, BMW, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, McLaran, Ferrari, Porsches, Lamborghinis, Tesla, new electrics like the Lucid and the Electric Mustang, muscle cars, old American classics, European classics, resto-mods, and even some very rare super cars from Italy, France or Sweden etc. I don’t think I left anything out?

Then things slowed down but people still want to get coffee in the morning and people in that area happen to have nice cars. Some businesses might want to be open but the forces at work are still keeping this event closed down.

The parking lots on both sides of the Cross Creek complex were blocked off and there was lots of private security keeping people out and official security handing out tickets to scofflaws. Basically they had eight parking spots in the street and only eight spots in the actual parking lot that usually holds I would say about five hundred cars.

I’m not sure if they open up the lots later in the day as I left by 10 AM and no barricades had been removed. Car shows in general are opening up as far as I can tell but not Malibu yet, maybe they will loosen up after the holiday. As for the Sunday of the 4th of July the cars and coffee crowd was kept at bay BUT the length of Pacific Coast Highway was jam packed with regular cars, campers mostly bringing surfers because the waves were supposed to be big.

As for the future I will keep trying at Malibu hoping it comes back. The big show at Lacy Park is scheduled for August and the Los Angeles auto show is in November.

  1. Maurice,

Is that you in the Grifo in the last photo?

    • Yes sir. We went there and only decided to stay longer because the cops were writing tickets for the most stupid things. Later that day the rest of the parking lot opened up and the cops disappeared.
