Garage water damage takes down more collector cars than most owners expect, and it almost never happens the way they picture it. Nobody expects to walk out and find a ’67 fastback floating. What actually happens is four inches of water from a failed water heater sitting on the floor overnight, or a slab that wicks moisture for a decade until the frame rails are gone from the inside.
Why Does Garage Water Damage Hit A Collection Harder Than A Daily Driver?
A modern car is built to live outside. It has sealed connectors, galvanized panels, closed-cell foam and drainage designed by people who assumed rain.
A car built in 1965 was built to a different standard, and then it was restored using materials chosen for authenticity rather than survivability. Cloth-braided wiring insulation, jute and horsehair padding under the carpet, wool carpet itself, Bakelite switchgear, untreated steel floors under thin sound deadening: every one of those is correct for the period, and every one of them holds water against metal.
Magnesium makes it worse. Magnesium alloy wheels of the Halibrand era corrode aggressively once moisture gets under the finish, and the damage is often structural rather than cosmetic. Corroded magnesium goes brittle and cracks, which is why vintage racers crack-test old wheels instead of trusting how they look.
Where Does The Water Actually Come From?
- Water heaters and furnaces installed in the garage. A failed tank empties its full capacity onto the floor, then keeps feeding the supply line until someone shuts it off.
- Slab moisture. Concrete without a vapor barrier wicks groundwater continuously. This is the one that kills cars slowly, under covers, over years.
- Failed floor drains that back up rather than drain.
- Roof and gutter failure, especially on detached garages that get inspected less often than the house.
- Grading. Ground that slopes toward the building sends every heavy rain at the door threshold.
- Burst supply lines on an exterior wall in a freeze.

What Does Water Actually Do To An Older Car?
Standing water is the obvious half. The less obvious half is that damage continues long after the floor is dry.
Water wicks upward through porous interior material and stays there. Jute padding under a carpet will hold moisture against a bare steel floor for weeks in a closed garage, and the rust starts at the seams and the box sections where nobody looks. Sills, floor pans and frame rails corrode from the inside out, which is why a car can look presentable and still fail an inspection at the structure.
Electrical damage runs on its own schedule. Water gets into connectors and looms, and corrosion propagates through the copper under the insulation. Faults show up months later, in circuits that were never submerged.
Then there’s everything that isn’t the car. Owner’s manuals, build sheets, factory documentation, spare parts, tools, and the concours paperwork that carries real value at sale. Paper is the first thing lost and the hardest to replace.
How Fast Do You Have To Move?
Faster than most people think. The EPA’s guidance on mold and moisture is specific: dry water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. Dried inside that window, in most cases mold won’t grow at all.
That window governs everything else. A wet-vac and a fan on Saturday morning beats calling someone on Monday.
Humidity matters after the water is gone. The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, and ideally between 30% and 50%. A garage that sits at 70% year-round is corroding your cars whether or not it ever floods.
How Should You Set A Garage Up To Survive One Bad Night?
Most of this is cheap and boring, which is why it doesn’t get done.
- Get the cars off the floor. Even four inches of clearance changes the outcome of a typical leak. Ramps, lifts, or a raised platform for the cars you rarely move.
- Seal the slab. A proper moisture barrier or sealed epoxy floor stops the slow wicking that does the long-term damage.
- Move the water heater out of the garage if the building allows it, or put it in a drain pan that’s actually plumbed to a drain.
- Fit a floor drain that works, and test it.
- Run a dehumidifier and put a cheap humidity meter where you’ll actually look at it.
- Get the paperwork out. Documentation belongs in the house, in a fireproof safe, scanned and backed up.
- Never store a car under a cover on a damp slab. The cover traps moisture against the paint and holds it there.
What Should You Do In The First 48 Hours?
Stop the source first, then get the water out and the air moving.
Don’t start the car. If water reached the intake, cranking it hydrolocks the engine and turns a cleaning job into a rebuild. Disconnect the battery instead.
Pull the carpets and padding out rather than trying to dry them in place. Soaked padding rarely dries clean, and the EPA lists carpet among the absorbent materials that may have to be thrown away once they’ve gone moldy.
Two situations mean calling a professional instead of working through it yourself: contaminated water, meaning sewage or a backed-up drain, which the EPA says needs someone experienced with contaminated-water damage, and scale, where the affected area is large or growth has already started.

On coverage, the distinction that matters is agreed value versus actual cash value. Specialist collector insurers write agreed-value policies precisely because book value is meaningless on a car like this. Check which one you hold, and whether it covers the garage’s contents as well as the cars.
On titles, the consequence is permanent. The FTC defines a flood title as damage from sitting in water deep enough to fill the engine compartment, and that status becomes part of the vehicle history report. The National Insurance Crime Bureau notes that flood-damaged vehicles declared a total loss should carry a salvage or flood title, and warns that sellers conceal that history through superficial repairs and title washing.

Garage water damage is a storage problem long before it’s a restoration problem. Raise the cars, seal the slab, fix the grading, get the paperwork into the house, and put a humidity meter somewhere you’ll see it.
