by Mike Gulett –
Monterey Car Week has just concluded and it was a very crowded week, even more than usual. I spent more than 45 minutes in traffic just getting out of Pebble Beach on Friday.
The auctions were a very big success with a new record set for an American made car (a Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe) and several other records reached as well.
The total sales for the week was a record at $758 million – a big increase over the previous record.
Here are just a few auction results that caught my attention.
1964 SHELBY COBRA DAYTONA COUPE
This special race car set the American record at $42,905,000 at the Gooding Christie’s auction in Pebble Beach. This is moving up there in the price range of the Ferrari 250 GTO, which is where it belongs in my opinion.
- Among the Most Important American Automobiles Ever Built
- One of Only Six Cobra Daytona Coupes Created to Defeat Ferrari’s 250 GTO
1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport
This special Corvette was sold at the RM Sotheby’s auction for $18,705,000. A Corvette record.
- One of just five legendary Corvette Grand Sports constructed and the first of only three Grand Sport coupes
- One of the most significant factory-built competition Corvettes ever created, engineered as a purpose-built sports-racing prototype with hundreds of unique components different than any production Sting Ray
2026 Ferrari Luce ‘Tailor Made’
The first Ferrari Luce production example was up for auction at RM Sotheby’s with proceeds going to charity and it sold for a whopping $40,000,000. Very likely a life time record price for this model and certainly a record for any new Ferrari. The expectation was only $1,100,000, so someone got an extra big tax deduction and are now in with the in crowd at Ferrari (if they were not already).
- An unrepeatable opportunity to acquire “Chassis 0”, the first production chassis of the Ferrari Luce program
- Ferrari will donate all proceeds of this charity auction to benefit future educational initiatives through The Ferrari Foundation, a recognized 501(c)(3) public charity
1937 Delage D8-120 S Aerodynamic Coupe by Pourtout
This is one of my favorite pre-war cars up for auction in Monterey offered by RM Sotheby’s from the Sam and Emily Mann collection. It sold for $5,780,000. I do not know if this is a record but it is still a great addition to anyone’s garage.
- One of the most beautiful cars in the world
- Best of Show at the 2005 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
- The original prototype for the D8-120 S chassis
- The personal automobile of Louis Delage

I remember when all you needed to make the Forbes 400 was $300,000,000.
How times have changed!
I believe the Pourtout selling price is a record for the Delage marque and certainly a record for any Pourtout bodied car. .
