by Mike Gulett –
My congratulations to Jurgen and Padma Wilms of Dusseldorf, Germany for their Bizzarrini class win at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday August 21, 2016.
This special AMC AMX/3 was sold through My Car Quest a couple of years ago.
There were only five AMX/3s made before American Motors shut the program down in late 1970. Then one more was assembled from the remaining parts for a total of six of these beautiful super cars.
The AMX/3 was engineered and constructed by the brilliant Giotto Bizzarrini with styling by AMC’s head of design Richard Teague. This AMX/3 was the car tested on the Monza race track by BMW who helped evaluate the AMX/3’s performance.
The cars in the Bizzarrini class were very special: all three Bizzarrini Spyders, a Le Mans class winning race car, the Manta (the first car designed by Giugiaro for his new firm ItalDesign), a Bizzarrini GT 5300 that won its class at Pebble Beach in the late ’90s, another rare AMX/3 and others.
It may be many years before there is another Bizzarrini class at Pebble Beach.
You can be sure that I will publish more on the Bizzarrini class later.
Let us know what you think in the Comments.
Racing became too expensive for most of us by the mid – sixties but one of my favorite drivers was connected with the AMX program if I remember right: Mark Donohue. Mark died at the wheel. He like my hero Dan Gurney made motor sports the glorious experience it became in my fast passing youth. I remember the drives as much as the cars.
fantastic car presented in an amazing colour!!!
Wow, if they could have produced that at a decent price………..I’d buy one.
I think many of us would have bought one!
Had these cars been produced it would have clearly eclipsed the Mangusta and Pantera, and possibly have saved AMC…
Jurgen, Your car looked fabulous, wonderful job, thank you for coming to America!! Don
Don, we loved seeing your car (and Mark’s) as well. And thanks for chatting with the docents about your car — it helps the tours to be more informative.
Congratulations on a great victory! I still plan on driving a beautiful AMX/3 (replica). AMX390.com Tom
Mike,
My name is Jared.
Jack Cohen was my Grandpa.
Is there anyway I can get in touch with the owner of the AMX3 now?
Jared,
This AMX/3 was sold at an auction a few years ago and I do not know the new owner but I could introduce you by email to the previous owner. Let me know if you want that.
That would be awesome Mike!
