Earlier I asked why there was such a big price estimate difference between two sports cars that seem similar in many ways: the 1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster and the 1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder both auctioned by RM at Amelia Island recently.
1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster
Estimate: $1,400,000 – $1,800,000 – Sold – $2,420,000 – 34% over the top of the estimate (this includes buyers commission).
1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder
Estimate: $250,000 – $350,000 – Sold – $605,000 – 73% over the top of the estimate (this includes buyers commission).
The market has spoken the BMW 507 Roadster is worth a lot more than a Maserati Ghibli Spyder – $1,815,000 more (4 times more)!
Note that the Maserati exceeded its estimate range by a much larger margin than the BMW. I don’t know what that means but at least it is something for the Maserati.
