C8 Corvette – An Artist Tries to Capture an Elusive Target on Canvas

by Wallace Wyss –

An old hand in the car world (you can find me on the masthead of Motor Trend in, egad, 1965…) by now it takes one helluva interesting car to get my attention. But I admit the new mid-engined C8 Corvette has got my motor running. They are out and about, over 10,000 delivered (roughly twice as many as BMW sold of the Z8 from beginning to end).

As a fine artist, my goal is to try to find them early, at sunrise, or late, and even when they are on the move. Then to get a good picture and see if the background “works” as a painting.

I’m like a big game photographer who has come to find there’s a new breed of wild critter out there on the veldt and everybody wants to see what it looks like out in the wild.

Forget those auto show shots (auto show? What’s that, daddy?) I’ve captured several on canvas so far but admittedly some are against European backgrounds because I would like to be a fly on the wall when one pulls up in Paris at a plush restaurant and everybody thinks at first it’s a Ferrari when they realize, Sacre Bleu, it’s one of those Yankee cars! Ditto in Italy.

I think I’ll paint a picture of one outside the Ferrari Maranello factory with work-suited employees all agog at the Americano car that is sending a torpedo right into the 488 assembly line.

I’m also planning a painting of the new mid-engine Z8 R Corvette race car re-configured as a street model to fight the new Ferrari 488 GT Modifcata club racer. Only seeing what the Ferrari club racer has on it is a bit difficult so early on because Ferrari musta forgot the flashbulbs when they shot it in some dim cave.

I’m hoping to eventually depict a stock 2020 Corvette in each color offered, and it’s even hard to keep up with that as there’s already been color changes for the 2021 model.

I got old waiting for the mid-engine Corvette. I’m glad it’s finally here and I’m here to tell ya I’m moving my brushes as fast as I can…
