The 2020 Lamborghini Sian FKP 37

by Wallace Wyss –

Just when I was worried that makers of supercars like Lamborghini would be caught out by the world changing to electric cars I see that Lambo already has one in production–and the Sian FKP 37 is not only the Italian marque’s first production hybrid but also they are claiming its most powerful road car ever.

Not to worry that the V12 engine is gone, it’s there and rated at 785-horsepower. The power rating is Lambo worthy at 819 hp. The factory is quoting a 0- 62 mph time of 2.8 seconds and say it will top out at over 220 mph, given enough road.

The V12’s 785 hp is the highest output ever achieved from a Lamborghini powerplant, that measured at 8,500 rpm. The electric motor, a 48-volt is rated at 34 hp. The power-to-weight ratio exceeds that of the Aventador SVJ. Forget about manual shift, this one comes with a seven-speed automatic.

The electric motor adds boost when accelerating hard, and at parking speeds-the e-motor alone can be used. An electronically-controlled all-wheel-drive system and a rear mechanical self-locking differential are standard.

The styling has design cues from a whole raft of Lamborghinis and some gadgety looking bits like Y-shaped headlights, and hexagonal taillights, all adding to its make-no-mistake-about-it, this is a Lamborghini. Production of the Sian FKP 37 will be limited to 63 units of the coupe and 19 units of the roadster and all have already been sold. The price–$3.6 million–reflects that each customer has the opportunity of having theirs customized to their taste.

The 2020 Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 also lacks a front plate as most of the Lambos don’t have front plates. The reason is that front plates can ruin the look of your Lamborghini according to car owners.

DESIGN COMMENTS

FRONT Nose recalls Countach. Odd shaped sideways Y-shaped running lights certainly make it distinctive.

SIDE Return of curves? While the side intakes dominate side view, there’s a lot of bulge to fenders showing flat surfaces are growing out of fashion now.

REAR Three taillights per side, especially when the lenses look like Ferrari Roma (or worse yet Chevy Vega) is what they chose but at least it will make it recognizable. Making engine covers black might give too much race car practical look but some owners may order them painted body color. The headrest firings are also painted flat black.

IN SUM It is a very dramatic car yet amazingly brings back the Countach in front view, a car a half century old. Though Ferrri already has a hybrid, this shows that Italian supercar makers have a new arena to compete in…
