This Apollo GT restoration project garage sale find was sold on My Car Quest in one day. The buyer and seller were about a one hour drive apart.
However, we needed the power of the Internet and the readership of My Car Quest to make the connection and it was done. The Apollo was picked up on Friday and is now safely in its new home.
Here are the photos; my thanks to Mike Clarke for the photos and to Troy T. for asking me to help sell his Apollo and to Tom D. for buying this very exciting project. I can’t wait to see it finished!
Remember the original connection started when I wrote about this very Apollo GT that was bought new by my friend, Ron Kellogg, in 1966.
Troy bought the Apollo at a garage sale and then Googled Apollo 1072 and found My Car Quest. Isn’t technology great?

You can sell your classic car on My Car Quest – even if the wheels are not on the car!
That was a fun day picking up the Apollo. The car was only a half hour away from the Apollo company headquarters back in the sixties and now a few hours away near the state capitol. The excitement of seeing the car for the first time and how solid the body was! Then the hard work of boxing all the parts, Tom and I filled the back of the truck and back seat with parts and soon realized we needed to rethink our load, so we pulled the Apollo doors out of the truck and mounted them on the car allowing us to strap them shut and load a few more boxes in the car. The doors fit perfect. Originally we were going to mount the hood on too but it wasn’t pinned in and rattled around so off it went to the back of the truck, that made for a safer trip home. Aside from knocking over Tom’s wives flower pot on the drive way with the trailer there were no mishaps. Tom is excited to get this project going and I can’t wait to take it for a test drive once it’s done! I will keep you updated on the progress.
BTW Tom needs a steering wheel and the chrome surround for the front window if anyone knows of any?
I’m excited to see this car and it sounds like it will be finally finished. I hope to see it at a show soon.
I bet it was an interesting trip with people slowing down to see “what is that on that trailer”. That was a smart move putting the doors on, I bet it was easy with those hinges.
The original steering wheel was wood with 3 separate aluminum spokes that fit into square broached pockets, will have to be custom made. MIke Lempert can make the original or a Nardi type but usually has a 6-8 month back log. I glued mine back together, but I’m thinking of drawing one up to make on a CNC mill
I think the front chrome surround will have to be custom made, no source yet. It’s chrome not polished aluminum? l need the front and rear but I won’t have the cost for several weeks. The 1072 windshield size is different slightly than the earlier cars so it will have to be custom made none the less. I am going to have my grill modified or a new one made, like the one shown above Andrew says this is no problem for him so he can make the window surround’s with no problem also.
There might be problems installing that windshield if it wasn’t supported right, it can twist a little.
I hope that Troy gave Tom the list that I sent him of things to look out for and that should be corrected on the car prior to finishing.
