Larry Perkins has had a unique and interesting life as an aerospace engineer, sculptor and privateer race car driver. In the 1960s he owned and raced the first Ferrari 250 GTO made and he raced it at Daytona and Sebring against some of the best drivers in the world like Phil Hill, Ken Miles and Dan Gurney.
This book tells the story of how Larry was able to race this special car, how he met his wife, Petra (who co-authors this book) and how he connected again years later with the GTO.
Before he raced himself he went to a Sebring race with friends and writes this about that experience…
The brightly painted cars in motion were like fine art. Aromas of fuel and Castrol and burnt rubber and hot metal and brake dust were like drugs. He heard music in the engines’ roar and a thudding scuff of tires under stress in corners. He wondered “What would it be like to actually do that myself?”
There are interesting details about racing in the 1960s. The best part is it is all true and is not something that would likely happen today.
Carpe diem could be a good sub-title for this memoir. It is a great read and well worth the money and time.
The authors will be at the Ferrari Club of America Annual Experience in Sebring, Florida. November 7-11, 2021 signing books at the Ferrari Literature Booth.
