The president of the Ferrari Club of America, South West Region, said it best “this is a club of friends, not just a car club.”

And it was a pleasant day indeed at the South Coast Arboretum, in Palos Verdes, California a peninsula that sticks out into the Pacific South of Los Angeles and offers different air and lighting that the poor folks back on solid land.

Over 75 Ferraris came and at times it looked like a Ferrari parking lot. But there were still plenty of flora and fauna to be seen, and even people touring the park got a free car show.

The very active Ferrari club has at least one activity per month, in mountain hideaways, beachside jaunts, or informal shows. Sometimes they are spirited out to private collections.

The oldest car at this one was a 1964 Lusso belonging to retired TWA pilot Earl Waggoner, one of a matched set he owns. Earl has been in Ferrari activities since the 1960s. Next to that was a 275GTB.

And there were many other newer models all the way up to the 488 Pista.

One was an usual aqua color. I couldn’t stand to shoot it as I didn’t think of it as a Ferrari color but I’ll come around.

The only Ferrari 430 in Tiffany Blue according to the owner

I got a kick out of a California Spyder owner lowering the top as he drove out. In these modern convertibles people don’t even want to pull over to lower their top.

The occasion honored the former Presidents of the FAC SW club, most of whom were able to stand and take a bow (only two had passed on by the 25th anniversary of this event, which is a testimony to how Ferrari ownership invigorates your life)

No Dinos were there, not a 206T, 246GT or 246GTS so I can only guess that they are all being restored. Ditto with Daytonas. With a concours at San Marino only a week off some of the best cars were home getting detailed.

The luncheon, featuring beef and chicken, was wonderful. I always feel the meal tastes better when you are near the ocean and dining al fresco.

The President of the club Jim Bindman, told me that it’s possible to join the club even if you don’t yet have your Ferrari. I recommend it. I joined a Ferrari club back in the ‘60s and later bought two of them. It’s a congenial group and believe me, they all love the same marque you do.

  1. Thanks for the report Wallace and the excellent photos Richard thé non-red faction certainly made its presence felt.
Who would have predicted a 430 Scuderia in Tiffany Blue PPG 666100!
This is almost as good as the 599 SA Aperta in Giallo Lady Gaga that lives in Switzerland.

So part of me says that ordering a Ferrari in a non-standard colour is throwing away your money another part of me says if you are special enough to own a Ferrari you might as well get what you want !
What do people think red vs non-red ?

  2. Richard Bartholomew says

I vote red and as custom as possible like this special concept made from an Enzo that I imagined. ;o)
