Another Monterey Car Week is in the Rear View Mirror

by Mike Gulett –

There is so much going on during Monterey Car Week that I know I missed a lot but still also saw a lot. Here are some cars that I thought were interesting.

An astounding price for this Porsche 928

This Porsche 928 GTS sold for the amazing price of $406,500 at the RM Sotheby’s auction. It did have a lot going for it; a late model GTS in essentially perfect as new condition with very low miles.

Yet I know this Porsche 928 was for sale at a dealer recently for a price of around $200,000. What a result for the seller. This must be a world record for a Porsche 928.

The highest price of the week was for this Ferrari race car

Maybe it is no surprise that the highest auction price of the week was for Ferrari and this one is a race car with an interesting history. This 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Spider by Scaglietti sold for $22,005,000 at RM Sotheby’s. It was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio, Carroll Shelby, Phil Hill, Eugenio Castellotti, Masten Gregory, Richie Ginther, Joakim Bonnier, Bruce Kessler, Jim Rathmann, and Chuck Daigh.

This Iso Grifo Targa also gets a great price

This Iso Grifo sold for $637,500 at the Gooding auction. The high price is because it is one of only 14 Series I Targas built and it is in terrific condition.

An Iso Grifo modified Can Am 7-Liter was well bought

This 1971 Iso Grifo 7-Litri Series II sold for $390,000 at RM Sotheby’s. This was a beautifully restored Grifo in excellent condition yet it was not born as a Can Am 7-Liter but was expertly converted many years ago. This explains the relatively low price – someone got a great deal.

A Bizzarrini P538 continuation does not make the reserve

Commissioned in the late 1970s by Frenchman Jacques Lavost. It was built in the early 1980s by Bizzarrini, Reali and Diomante at Bizzarrini’s home in Gabbro near Livorno Italy.

It was also a no sale at a high bid of $450,000 at the Mecum auction. This is the second time this Bizzarrini P538 did not sell at Mecum Monterey.

Bizzarrini GT 5300 Strada wins best in show at Concorso Italiano

The Concorso Italiano Best in Show was a 1967 Bizzarrini 5300 Strada owned by Billy and Tisa Hibbs of Tyler, Texas.

The only other time I remember a Bizzarrini winning this award was in 2005 when the Gerd Eckstein Bizzarrini won it, which was also green! Maybe that was my problem in 2014 when my silver Bizzarrini GT 5300 lost out for best in show to a Lamborghini GT 350.

We expect the top award at Pebble Beach to go to a pre-war car don’t we? And they did not disappoint this year.

  1. 250 GTO’s are ridiculously over valued if the 410 only brought 22M . No GTO ever accomplished anything close to this piece of history.

  2. Wayne Watkins says

Twenty two million & five thousand bucks is a lot of money for a ten race driver 1955 Ferrari 410 in RHD , however you can’t take it with you , so its new owner will enjoy looking at it .

  3. Glenn Krasner says

$406,500 was is a ridiculous amount for any 928, I don’t care what provenance it has or model it is. Glenn in Brooklyn, NY.

  4. I agree but one never ever accomplished what this car did, nor ever had the cast of characters behind the wheel.
